ARE YOU READY?

Over the past few months, anyone who
is paying attention, is aware that a
number of disasters, both natural and
man made, have occurred in various
parts of the state, nation and world.
These include, winter storms, floods
wildfires, earthquakes, tsunami's
nuclear disaster, tornadoes, hurricanes
and terrorist acts.

Thus far, our area has been lucky.
But, that may not be always the case.

What would you do if  water, gas
electricity and telephone service
were cut off, particularly for an
extended period of time? If no
gasoline was available? If the
food store shelves were empty?
If the there was civil disorder
and anarchy in the streets?

Individuals, households, churches
synagogues, and neighborhood
businesses would do well to ponder
these questions and prepare for
whatever may come our way, today
tomorrow, or at sometime in the
future.

Remember, government can't save
us...we must save ourselves and the
government!

Preparedness Program.

Are You Ready for the Summer Heat?
Release Date: June 17, 2010Release Number: 1899-012
» More Information on New York Severe Storms and Flooding
Albany, N.Y. -- As the days get longer and warmer, State and Federal emergency management officials warn that extreme heat can be very dangerous and in some instances even fatal, so it is important to be ready.
When the air temperature or humidity rises above optimal range for comfort, evaporation is slowed and the body must work harder to maintain a normal temperature. Exposure to extreme heat can cause physical problems and may cause heat disorders or illnesses. Older adults, young children and those who are sick or overweight are most vulnerable to extreme heat.
Conditions that can induce heat-related illnesses include stagnant atmospheric conditions and poor air quality. Consequently, people living in urban areas may be at greater risk from the effects of a prolonged heat wave than those living in rural areas.
During extremely hot weather, you should take the following precautions:
Stay indoors as much as you can, on lower floors if possible.
Limit exposure to the sun and use sun block with a high sun protector factor rating (at least 15 spf) if you must be outdoors.
If your home does not have air conditioning, spend the hottest part of the day in public buildings such as libraries, schools, movie theaters, shopping malls, and other community facilities.
Use fans. Circulating air can cool the body by increasing the perspiration rate of evaporation.
If you have window air conditioning, eliminate any holes or gaps around the installation.
Check air-conditioning ducts for proper insulation.
Eat well-balanced, light, and regular meals. Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician.
Drink plenty of water. Persons who have epilepsy or heart, kidney, or liver disease; are on fluid-restricted diets; or have a problem with fluid retention should consult a doctor before increasing liquid intake.
Limit intake of alcoholic beverages.
Dress in loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible.
Protect your face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning and who spend much of their time alone.
Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
Avoid strenuous work during the warmest part of the day, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Have a buddy system when working in extreme heat, and take frequent breaks.
Exercise should be done in the early morning hours between 4-7 a.m.
Make sure there is enough food and water for pets.
Heat-Induced Illnesses
Exposure to extreme heat can cause serious illness. Heat Cramps are painful spasms, usually in leg and abdominal muscles, and may be accompanied by heavy sweating. Heat Exhaustion is more serious. Symptoms include heavy sweating, but skin may be cool, pale, or flushed. Fainting or dizziness, weak pulse, nausea, vomiting, exhaustion, and headaches may occur.
If you experience any of these symptoms, sit or lie down in a cool place, loosen your clothing, and sip half a glass of water every 15 minutes. Discontinue drinking water if you become nauseous, and seek immediate medical attention if vomiting occurs.
Heat Stroke is a severe medical emergency and can be life-threatening.. Symptoms include a high body temperature, as much as 105 degrees; hot, red, dry skin; rapid, weak pulse; rapid shallow breathing; and possible loss of consciousness. If you suspect you have heat stroke, seek immediate medical assistance or call 911.
Sunburn is a common summer problem. In severe cases it can cause swelling, blisters, fever, and headaches. Take a shower using soap to remove oils that may block pores, preventing the body from cooling naturally. Apply dry, sterile dressings to any blisters and, if they persist, see a doctor.
Energy Conservation
Power outages are more likely to occur during warm weather, when utility usage is at its peak. To avoid putting a strain on the power grid, conserve energy to help prevent power disruptions.
Set your air conditioner thermostat no lower than 78 degrees.
Only use the air conditioner when you are home.
Turn non-essential appliances off. Only use appliances that have heavy electrical loads early in the morning or very late at night.

FEMA's mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.

CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY
POSES HEALTH RISKS FOR
HUMANS, PETS AND POND

Excessive use and dependence on lawn
chemicals and flea/tick treatments pose
health risks for humans, our pets and
Buckingham Pond.

http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=912858&category=&BCCode=&newsdate=3/19/2010

Add to this, excessive dumping of road
salt, which drys and become airborne
mixing with exhaust fumes of the growing
vehicle traffic on neighborhood streets.

Dying street trees are the canaries in our
urban environment, but we are not paying
attention.

Health risk warnings are clearly posted
on alcoholic beverage and cigarette labels.

What about the lawns, sidewalks and streets
we tred? The air we breathe?

Does Obamacare address these issues?

How about personal responsibility?

HOW TO COPE WITH SNOW/ICE

Our significant snow storm of the
season arrived yesterday.

Here are a few tips to cope with
subsequent snow/ice events.

The City of Albany

1)should plow
main roads, like New Scotland Ave
with plows lined up in tandem.

Sweep the outbound lanes clear
all at once, the same for the in-
bound lanes.

Instead of the procedure the City
uses now:
a) let snow pile up
b) clear the center lanes
c) continue to let snow pile
up in curb lanes
d) send plows tearing along
a 40-50 mph causing a
heavy sludge tsunami
which inundates drive
entrances, sidewalks
and corners. The elderly
are put at health risk
if they try to shovel the
heavy sludge, or, are
forced to shell out cash
to have driveways/sidewalks
cleared. This on top of
paying high property taxes
which do not decrease
with los market values.

The City wants to return
to the 100, 000 population
mark, to qualify for government
aid and increase the property tax
base, theirby increasing revenues
and balancing the city budget?

Well.... don't kill off geezers
and drive homeowners out of
the city with out of control
city and school property taxes
failing to crack down on crime
and tolerating bad behavior
in city schools.

2. Use less road salt - it is
expensive and harmful
to our expensive vehicles
road and bridge surfaces
the environment, including
killling street trees and
posing a health risk when
it drys, becomes airborne
and is inhaled

3. What about safety? In snow
ice storms, reduce speed
limits on city streets to
15 mph, and have the APD
ticket violators.

Remember, Democrats are in
power. They know what is best
all. Right?

Sound free advice at no cost in
consulting fees!

SURVIVAL IN THE HOOD

Informed voting is but one responsibility
of citizenship.

Being aware of what is going on in our
neighborhood and taking personal
responsibility for our own safety and
survival ,and that of our loved ones, is
imperative.

Let no one lull you into a false sense
of security. Crime is on the increase
and we have to respond to that fact.

Vandalism, thefts, burgalries, robberies
graduate to drug dealing, violent crimes
home invasions and more.

Expect civil disorder and anarchy to
follow a disaster or terror attack.

This is no a drill. We live in a perilous
post 9-11 world.

The police can not be everywhere , at all
times, nor will they be in a disaster or
terror attack.

Are you and your loved ones prepared?

Here is the latest burglary advisory from
Officer Rick Romand: read and respond
accordingly:

NA Presidents and addressees, Please see the below breakdown of Burglaries that have occurred. As you can see the Burglaries are not specific to one area. So we are asking that even if they don’t appear to be occurring in your area, you follow the below listed Burglary prevention tips. In addition we would appreciate you helping us get the word out to your neighbors. Please remind them “If You See Something, Say Something” call 518-438-4000 Non-Emergency to report suspicious activity and 911 for Emergencies. We are still offering home and business security surveys. Please take advantage of this service and call or email our office 518-458-5668 (Janet) jparker@albany-ny.org or 518-458-5669 (Rick) rromand@albany-ny.org to set up an appointment. Thank you, Rick

Burglary Prevention Tips:
ü Keep your doors locked when you’re home and when you’re not. Burglaries don’t just occur at night. Almost half of all residential burglaries occur from thieves gaining entry through unlocked doors or windows.
ü Use deadbolt locks with at least a one inch throw on exterior doors
ü Keep all exterior lights on at night
ü Keep shrubs/trees clear from windows area as they could provide concealment to a would be burglar.
ü When out of town cancel newspapers and mail
ü When out of town arrange for someone to shovel your sidewalk and walkways
ü Call police about any suspicious persons or activity in your neighborhood.

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR WINTER SURVIVAL
IN AN EMEGENCY/DISASTER OR TERROR ATTACK?

How will you survive with no electricity, water, food, heat
in the icy grip of winter? With an empty gas tank in your
car?

Don't count on your government, neighborhood churches
synagogues, schools, pharmacies, gas stations and food
stores to save you. They are not prepared.

You are on your own. Your survival, and your loved ones
including your pets, will hinge on whether or not you
prepare now.

TICKS

See TU article:

http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/storyprint.asp?StoryID=792133

Buckingham Pond Park and the City
Golf Course are loaded with ticks.
Also, the area around Hartman Rd
Community Garden.

When walking your pets in the park or
at the golf course, after hours, keep them
out of tall grass and leaves.

Check yourself and your pets carefully
after every outing.

Newborn ticks appear at this time of year.
They are about pin head size. Very small.
But, just like baby rattlesnakes, just as
dangerous as adults.

One female tick can have a 1,000 or more
offsprings.

Beware that you or your pets do not bring
ticks indoors. Your furniture and carpets
could become infested.

After a walk last night, spotted a tick or two
near my dogs' bedding. Washed their bedding
dried it in a hot dryer. Vacuumed floors and
rugs wherever, the dogs lay last night.

We routinely sweep/vacuum where dogs
sleep and air their bedding in the hot sun, or
the cold of winter. Their bedding is washed
often.

This helps guard against tick and flea infestations.

We do not use Front Line or other pesticides.
But do apply Avon Skin So Soft. Sage and
Rosemary also, help discourage mosquitoes
in season, to guard agist Heart Worm.

Our dogs do get blood tests for Lyme and
Heart Worm, get Lyme booster shots and
are given Intercepter tablets, once a month
during the warm season, to guard against
Heart Worm. Intercepter because, they are
Collie dogs, who can suffer fatality from
Heart Guard.

The TU also had a good article several days
ago, about pet first aid kits and providing
for your pets in a disaster/emergency.

Survivorman/Woman

Watched a couple of episodes of suvivorman.

Whether we want to admit it or not, we are
engaged in an urban version of survivorman.

Prudent people will recognize this and do
the best they can to prepare to survive
whatever may befall us in the days and
months ahead.

What to do?

Water is essential to life, we can survive only
a few days without it. Store some water and
periodically refresh your supply. Glass
containers are best. You will need a gallon
a day, per person. Have at least a weeks
supply.

Food with a long shelf life should be stored
including cans, jars and dry goods with a
good shelf life. Use and replentish your
emergency food stock so you always have
a week or more of reserves.

Encourage your local churches and schools
to maintain emergency water/food stocks.

Make sure you have, at least a 30 day supply
of any necessary prescription medicines on
hand at all times.

Assume and plan accordingly for the likelihood
that you may not have electricity, refrigeration
air conditioning, heat, water and sewer service
or garbage pick up.

If your yard soil is not contaminated from
excessive reliance on lawn chemicals, plant
a vegetable garden. Some berries, fruit trees.

You might want to construct a small root
cellar to store crops like potatoes, turnips
beets, cabbage.

Have some firewood, a propane tank, candles
matches and charcoal on hand.

Keep you vehicle gas tank nearly full at all
times.

Keep a go bag of essential supplies/copies
of personal records ready at all times, in
case you have to evacuate your home/city
on short notice.

Have a family emergency/disaster plan.
A telephone contact source outside the
local area. A designated gathering place
in the local area, and also, one beyond
the local area.

Make sure you have a gun, and plenty ammo
and know how to safely use and store both.

Have some cash on hand, but recognize that
if our currency system collapses, cash will
be worthless.

Better to have essential supplies on hand
that will last for a long time, and which can
be traded or bartered.

Learn some first aid and have first aid supplies
on hand.

Recognize that in the event of a major disaster
or terror attack, we will be on on own.
Government can't save us, we must save
ourselves.

Prepare for worst case scenarios. If they never
happen, we will be blessed. If they do, and we
are not prepared, survival will be problematic.

Emergency/Disaster Preparedness

Today's Times Union has an American Red Cross insert.
Take particular note of pages 4 and 5 which contain
Get Ready/Be Safe information and tips.

We live in dangerous times and must take responsibility
for our individual and collective survival. Government
can't save us...we must save ourselves.

What can you do? Become informed and take action
to make sure your household is prepared for whatever
comes our way. Consult earlier posts in the archives
of this blog and also, http://lonerangeralbany.blogspot.com/
for links to emergency preparedness sources.

Once your household is secure. Turn your attention to your
block. Next, get your church, synagogue, school to prepare
to serve as an emergency center providing water, food,
shelter and heat for neighbors.

Volunteer to serve as a block captain to organize and
protect your block. Volunteer to organize your church
synagogue or school to prepare as an emergency center.
Volunteer to serve on our neighborhood Emergency/
Disaster Preparedness Committee, to develop a neighbor-
hood plan, hold public information meetings and provide
for coordination with AFD and APD for fire and police
security/ neighborhood participation
efforts in times of emergencies/disasters.

Currently, our neighborhood is operating under the Darwinian
principle of "survival of the fittest". We should move beyond
that to a coordinated neighborhood plan that will provide
for survival and security of residents.

Recent Happenings Homeland Security

Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings and the local Red Cross Chapter announced they are partnering to promote emergency/disaster preparedness education. This is a late, but good first step, but falls far short of what is needed.

See what Huntsville, Alabama has done: http://news.aol.com/story/ar/_a/alabama-city-reopening-fallout-shelters/20070927171609990001?ncid=NWS00010000000001

There are some who proclaim Albany is not a target for terrorists. Think Again!

Albany is a symbolic target- the seat of state government, the Capitol of the Empire State.

Albany is a major Northeast transportation cross roads with rail lines, interstate highways and bridges as well as a major incoming container cargo port.

Albany is a soft target that is not prepared.

GOVERNOR SPITZER has promulgated an administrative directive providing for the State DMV to issue drivers licences to illegal immigrants.

By so doing, Governor Spitzer is flaunting the rule of law as well as aiding and abetting terrorists
(foreign and their domestic allies), thereby placing all New Yorkers and the nation in harms way.

The Governor can not supercede state law by administrative action.

Governor Spitzer must immediately rescind his unlawful and dangerous directive.
