SITTING DUCKS BEWARE

NA Presidents and addressees, Please be advised that there has been a pattern of burglaries in the City specifically on the 600 block of myrtle avenue, the 400 block of yates street, and the 400 block of Hudson avenue. All of the victims have had electronics equipment stolen from them. Please pass this information along to your members and employees.

Burglary Prevention Tips:
ü Keep your doors locked when you’re home and when you’re not. Burglaries don’t just occur at night. Almost half of all residential burglaries occur from thieves gaining entry through unlocked doors or windows.
ü Use deadbolt locks with at least a one inch throw on exterior doors
ü Keep all exterior lights on at night
ü Keep shrubs/trees clear from windows area as they could provide concealment to a would be burglar.
ü When out of town cancel newspapers and mail
ü When out of town arrange for someone to shovel your sidewalk and walkways
ü Call police about any suspicious persons or activity in your neighborhood.

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR WINTER SURVIVAL
IN AN EMEGENCY/DISASTER OR TERROR ATTACK?

How will you survive with no electricity, water, food, heat
in the icy grip of winter? With an empty gas tank in your
car?

Don't count on your government, neighborhood churches
synagogues, schools, pharmacies, gas stations and food
stores to save you. They are not prepared.

You are on your own. Your survival, and your loved ones
including your pets, will hinge on whether or not you
prepare now.

BUCKINGHAM POND PARK STATUS

Fall is here, with it wet, cool weather.

The green algae growth is dissapating.

Carl has done a fine job, filling in for
Jack, who is on the mend.

The City crew replaced the deteriorated
split rail fencing on the Milner Ave footpath
with posts strung with rope. Looks good
so far, but we will have to watch for vandals
who may cut and steal the rope.

City OGS did a nice job installing a sidewalk
curbing and a crosswalk leading to the
Southeast corner of the park, from Euclid
Ave.

However, speeding traffic still presents a
hazard to pedestrians. Also, cars that run
the stop sign at the foot of Euclid hill. The
damaged guard rail has taken many a hit
from cars who have failed to negotiate the
turn.

Footpaths are wet and slippery this time
of year, particularly on the South and East
sides of the park.

The City did not resurface these paths with
coarse bluestone, as recommended. So, the
paths present a fall hazard to strollers
and joggers, who should take care to make
sure of their footing

The vines and brush strangling trees on
the South and West sides of the park were
not cut and cleared. Maybe, during the
Winter freeze, when the tick hazard is
lower?

Little has been done to deal with the
shoreline erosion problem, which is
a major contributor to the filling in of
the pond .

Planting water tolerant species of
bushes and trees, and bulkheading
severely eroded shore areas are
among the solutions.

The shore footpaths at the East and
Southeast parts of the park, are most
in need of these corrective actions

Algae blooms thrive in shallow waters
fed by run off of lawn chemicals and
road salt from within the surrounding
pond watershed.

These blooms will only increase until
homeowners, and Stonehenge Apartments
reduce their lawn chemical-fertilizer
practices, and the City reduces, or
eliminates road salt applications on roads
and streets that drain into the pond.

Drug dealers have appeared after dark
in the parking semi circle, foot of Colonial
North side of the park.

The police can't be there all the time. It
is up to residents of the apartments and
homes who have a view of the parking
lot, to keep watch and report suspicious
activities in the parking lot and adjacent
children's play and picnic areas, to the
police.

Strollers and joggers should carry cell
phones keyed into to contact the police.

In sum, it is up to residents to maintain
the condition and safety of the park.

With limited resources and fiscal problems
we can not look to city government to do
more than the minimum maintenance of
the park for some time to come.

Nonetheless, the pond park remains a
a place to be enjoyed by strollers, pets
and joggers.

Yesterday, while walking with Mick
along the shore path, Southeast corner
of the park, we observed a Blue Heron
taking flight from the brush.

Neighborhood residents have more
immediate concerns, like paying their
rising property taxes, mortgages and
rents, keeping their jobs and staying
safe in an increasingly unstable and
dangerous world.

Emergency/Disaster preparedness
is our responsibility, particularly with
the approach of the long, cold winter.

Farewell Sugar Maple

You stood watch over our house for a
quarter of a century. Providing us with
shade in Summer, dazzling yellow, red
color in the Fall. I would compost your
leaves in a corner of the backyard.

In Spring and Summer, your leaves gave
off oxygen to combat the air pollution from
the growing volumes of speeding traffic
on New Scotland Avenue.

Like the other trees, along the Avenue
you absorbed the hits of passing cars
and trucks, had your roots disturbed
by sidewalk and sewer work, suffered
from gypsy moth bouts, absorbed hydro-
carbon laden vehicle emissions and were
assaulted each winter by tons of road
salt pushed against your trunk by city plows.

All these, shortened your life, and
brought about your early demise.

I watched as the City crew took you
down in less than an hours time.

I thought of the changes in our lives that
you silently witnessed over the past
quarter century.

Our front yard looks very empty
without you.

We are deeply saddened at your loss.

TAXING HOMEOWNERS MORE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE

The TU reports a tax hike for homeowners in the proposed
Albany City Budget.
http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=848373

The rationale for taxing homeowners more is that
the“relative value of the city’s commercial properties declined.”

So have home values!

The tax increase would amount to about “$69 more next year
for a house assessed at $150,000.”

Most homes in Ward 14 are assessed at two and three
times that amount.

What about subsequent years? Where is the sunset on this
extra tax? There is none! It is a tax that will keep on giving
year after year.

The TU story reports that “commercial property taxes
will decrease.”

If homeowners think this is bad, wait until the proposed
Albany School District tax hike is announced
AFTER the NOVEMBER 3 ELECTION.

Who are the 2 citywide school board candidates?
What do they have to say on these taxing matters?

Where is Joe Igoe? Loyal to the mayor, we know.
Looking out for his Ward 14 constituents, NO!

Ward 14 needs a leader, not a follower, like Joe Igoe.
If Joe Igoe were and independent, leader he would
say that the tax hike on homeowners is unacceptable.
He would sponsor a resolution in the Common
Council calling for adjustment of the Homestead tax
for residential properties.

He would sponsor a Resolution calling on Governor
Paterson to rescind his veto of PILOT payments from
the state for the Harriman Office Campus.

He would sponsor a Home Rule Resolution to
consolidate city schools with city government
establish ONE property tax roll to finance both
and return to K-8 neighborhood schools.

Were Igoe a leader, he would say the City has
to look elsewhere for monies to balance the city budget
and avoid increasing property taxeson homeowners
- like cancelling Alive at FiveConcerts,
– like eliminating winter skating atSwinburne Park
– like increasing assessed valueson properties of
absentee slum lords who are destroying city
neighborhoods and the cityproperty tax base, while
raking in lots of doughfrom their deteriorating
substandard dwellings.

Joe Igoe is Chair of the Common Council Code
Enforcement Committee and is allowing urban blight
slum lords, Section 8 housing and associated crime
to invade Ward 14.

Debate Joe Igoe? Forget about it! Just vote him out
of office on November 3rd.

Write me in for Common Council Ward 14.

I will provide the needed leadership!
