SNOW IS ON THE WAYLet's see if City OGS can do a better job ofplowing main roads like New Scotland Avenue.Instead of plowing the center lanes and lettingsnow and road salt build up in curb lanes, thensending plows speeding along in curb lanes ata high rate of speed creating a tsunami of heavysludge that breaks over curb islands and sidewalks and plugs driveways ----- leavingsenior homeowners ,
along the Avenue , to move the heavy sludge themselves, or spend money (they need to live on and pay their taxes) to haveothers clear their walks and driveways, oftentwice, or more, because of the lag in city plowingof the curb lanes, which allows snow/road salt sludge build up, which, swamps sidewalks anddriveway entrances , that have already beencleared once by the homeowners or their hiredsnow removal outfits.Try this method - (which was in place during theWhalen admin, and when Harry Maikels ran OGS)Have two plows in tandem plow center lanes and curb lanes in one sweep, both outbound and inboundon New Scotland Ave. Don't let the snow pile up. Makea couple of passes each way.Oh yes. Use less road salt so as not to deteriorateroad surfaces, our expensive vehicles, kill streettrees and create the "white death" air pollutionwhich results when the road salt drys and becomesairborne by the movement of traffic and by windsparticularly in March. The resultant air pollution presents a healthhazard, particularly to residents who livealong the heavily trafficked main roads. The airborne road salt also sandblasts theexteriors of homes, requiring more oftenmaintenance, painting, chimney repairs, etcadding to the burden of escalating propertytaxes for seniors who are trying to surviveon fixed or reduced incomes.Lastly, advse drivers to slow down, whenweather and raod conditions require.Has anyone noticed the large number of4 sale signs on front lawns along New ScotlandAve, Buckingham Drive, and other main roads? The conditions described in this post arehigh on the list of contributory factors whichresult in homeowners selling out.Joe SullivanLabels: STATE OF NEIGHBORHOOD/ PRIORITIES
