WHAT DO YOU GET FOR YOUR VOTE? The derelict forner gas station has stood on the corner of New Scotland Ave and Whitehall Rd for eight years, or more. We have, called for the demolition of the derelict building, and removal of the contaminated soil at the site. We propose that the City truck in clean fill and compost, construct a rolling berm, and plant a variety of hardwoods, conifers and flowering bushes; install some benches, a flagpole and a granite marker, creating the Daniel P O'Connell, Memorial Pocket Park on the 3/4 acre corner site. We further propose that the Daniel P O'Connell Senior Housing and Neighborhood Community Center be built on the adjoining 8 to 10 acres. More than four years have past since we first presented these ideas. Nothing has happened! Dan O'Connell lived on Whitehall Rd, at Holmes Court. it is only fitting that current Democratic officeholders make these proposals a reality. Were Dan alive, he would do this in recognition that the aging, loyal Democrats, of this neighborhood, should have this senior housing, so that they can remain in the neighborhood as they sell their single family homes to a new generation of homeowners. Passing by the corner of Whitehall at New Scotland, one sees the campaign signs of Democratic candidates including McNulty for Congress, Spitzer for Governor/Paterson for Lt. Governor and Jennings/Barnette for State Democratic Committee. Will they honor the memory of Dan, and meet the needs of aging neighborhood homeowners, by constructing the Daniel P O'Connell Senior Housing/Neighborhood Community Center and Memorial Pocket Park? Ask them, before you give them your vote! Joe Sullivan
